So my mother, who is over 60, got student loans of about $3,600 back in '76-'78.
She apparently didn't make any payments on it and by the early '90s it had gotten to over $20,000.
In '92 the gov't scooped ~$400 from her bank account.
She wrote an angry letter (single mom, 3 kids, low income) and they gave the money back.
That was the last time she had anything to do with her student loans or any money taken off.
Apparently she had not heard anything for years and years before '92.
She has never made a lot of money over the years, and even now has very little and has to work doing day home looking after kids part time.
She has a sister that suddenly passed away (due to brain cancer on Dec 23) who was didn't have a lot of money either, but had a mortgage on small house in a small town in BC.
Her sister had an insurance policy on the house that paid out the mortgage. (House has to sell now before she finds out how much she will get)
My mother is concerned that the gov't will scoop all the money. Its not a huge amount, but it could make a real difference in her life, including not having to work looking after small children.
Is there any kind of limitation after that amount of time?
Who should she contact? What should she look into?
If I understand correctly it was only Canada student loan.
She had just move to Ontario, living there less than a year so they wouldn’t do her loan.
BC, where she moved from, wouldn’t help because they had a similar program.
So it had to be out of Sask, her birth Prov.
So Brain trust any thoughts to help her out?
Please no 'just pay the money back' / 'she owes it and should pay it out' / 'drain on society' type comments. She may not have earned a lot of money but she a huge volunteer over the years donating thousands of hours of her time to various community efforts such as being a scout leader for nearly a decade, and much more.
