I 'churn' cards. I get the first year bonus, set a reminder on my phone, and cancel after the first year while picking up the latest deal.
This Amex Gold Reward is one of the best bonuses right now. I never really figure out the math on cashback cards though (where's the fun in $30.21 off your bill!!!) but definitely a personal preference.
-First year annual fee waived ($150)
-Free supplemental card ($50)
-20,000 points once you use the card for $500 purchases in the first 3 months
-double points on gas, groceries, travel
You also get 10,000 points each time you refer family and friends who apply and get a card. Usually I get my wife a supplemental card, but this time I referred her after I got the card in the mail (3 days after applying, by Expresspost) and got a 10, 000 point referral bonus, and she will get her own 20,000 point bonus. We can both transfer into our same Aeroplan account at 1 to 1 (some times in the year Aeroplan gives more bonuses on those transfers).
So after a couple online applications and a referral, We'll have at least 50,000 Aeroplan points in free bonuses and can book both of us return flights to California next summer . Even if we decide to cancel the cards once we transfer the miles to Aeroplan it's an awesome deal.
