Presidents Choice/Simpli Financial

I talked to a guy at PC today who told me they will stop charging $1.50 for an interac e transfer once they become Simpli Financial! That's good news for me as I use that option fairly often. I had opened a Tangerine acct. in order to avoid that charge and still have free banking.

PC also said they will be offering a really good interest rate for savings once they become Simpli Financial - also good news. This change happens on Nov. 1 so I will be looking to see what the deal is there.

TransferWise to RBC USD Account

Has anyone been able to use TransferWise to transfer to or from a RBC USD account (opened from Canada)?

Failing that does anyone have any suggestions on how to get better transfer rates when moving USD to CAD through RBC? The 3.5% or so that RBC is taking when doing transfers is starting to add up.

CRA - change Q4 instalment amount?

$

I've been self-employed and paying taxes by quarterly instalments for several years now. I just pay the amounts CRA lays out on the notices that come in the mail as it is always similar year-to-year.

However, starting in Q4 this year, I've taken a 'normal' job on payroll and tax is being deducted at the source. Accordingly, for Q4, it doesn't really make sense to pay the suggested CRA amount on the notice as I'll be way over-paying taxes and then I'd have to wait a few months to collect the tax refund.

Does anyone know if I can just pay a lower amount for the Dec 15 instalment?

I've looked around the CRA website, but it's not clear. I just don't want to be nailed with penalties/interest when they see that my Q4 instalment payment amount is less then their amount from the instalment notice.

Cheers.

Critique my Couch Potato Portfolio

$

Since I have accumulated enough money in my TD e-series account that switching from index funds to index ETFs makes sense for me, I am thinking about starting a new couch potato portfolio.

Vanguard MSCI Canada Index ETF (VCE): 30%
Canadian Short-Term Bond Index ETF (VSB): 40%
iShares MSCI World Index (XWD): 30%

Total MER: ~ 0.23%

I am thinking that XWD will give me exposure to US Equities (50% of XWD) and European Equities (~45% of XWD). For Canadian, I have VCE and 5% of XWD along with 40% in bonds.

Is this diversified enough? Any other thoughts/comments? Having 3 ETFs will also lower the costs when buying/selling (which I plan to do twice a year). 40% in short term bonds is where I am comfortable so I don't really want suggestions to change that even though I am in my early 30s.

Loan/Mortgage to buy property overseas

Hi,

Edited new post:

Can i get a personal loan worth $200K to buy a property overseas in India?
The reason why i want to apply in Canada is because the interest rates in India are expensive.
At the time of posting this i got a quote of 8.5% floating interest rate for a period of 10 years. Monthly payment is 2567 CAD (INR converted to CAD).
I am sure i can get something cheaper in Canada.
My gross annual income is between 70K-80K. I have no debts and a credit score of 700.

Old post:

Can i get a mortgage (preferably) or a personal loan to buy a property overseas? It is a 2 bedroom apartment worth $200K in India.
My gross annual income is between 70K-80K. I have no debts and a credit score of 700.
What interest should i expect? And which institution will grant me this loan? Can i get the loan for the full amount?

Looking to book a trip using Expedia for TD.
I have 100000 points so I can redeem $500 from my trip. My trip costs $5000, so if I redeem all my points will I get points on my remaining balance that I pay with my credit card (9 points x $4500)?

What's the best way to maximize value using TD for Expedia?

100% Entertainment deduction vs 50%

$

Hey guys,

I am aware that meal and entertainment expenses are deductible at 50%. A local business we partner with (a bar) hands out promotional items for us and sometimes does a draw for local sports tickets or concert tickets that we provide them with.

Are those deductible at 100% because they are not really gifts to clients, but rather promotional expenses that increase our brand value. Also, how would we have to prove that we didnt just gift them to the bar owner?

Thanks,

Michael

So tangerine has a max of 3 external accounts that can be linked.
Is there a maximum of how many times you can unlink and then link to new external bank accounts?

Simplii Financial Goes For A Shi*

So right at the stroke of midnight eastern time I log into the Simplii Financial website...

I want to find out what their High Interest Savings Account is going to offer in terms of interest rate...

I'm ready to go...

Eyes wide open...

Been watching the clock for two-and-a-half hours...

tick tock -- tick tock etc etc.

And what do I find...

Mobile and internet banking is unavailable from midnight to 5 a.m. eastern time due to scheduled maintenance...

After a couple of months of anticipation...

And me staying up way past my bed time...

I get a "temporarily out of service" notice...

Damn...

Simply put -- not the best of starts...

Just spoke to SImplii ... (called them to speak about this and that).

And was told that new promo just started on Nov 1 .. 3% on new deposits .. running until Feb 28, 2018.

Promo will start automatically basically ... -- won't need to call them to accept it (as we often did in the past over at PCF).

I saw something here - http://www.canadianrewards.net/2017/10/ ... ncial.html

"1) Simplii Financial will waive the Interac e-transfer fee after Nov 1, 2017"

... and called Simplii to verify this / to ask some questions about this ...

And I was told this is permanent thingy! ... FREE Interac e-transfer -- unlimited ... and permanently (not a promo) ... for example, vs. EQ Bank's 5 FREE Interac e-transfers / per month.

PCF used to charge $1.50 for each Interac e-transfer previously.

I got this email from Mogo, and it seems too good to be true? Anyone try this out? Take out 10k, earn $~55 at EQ bank (or other investments as you choose), and then pay it back?

Basically a free loan if you decide to pay it back in 100 days. Rate is around 20% though if you don't...

Equifax Canada - pulling one's own credit report

$
0
0
Every year, I make a point of pulling my credit history from both EQUIFAX and TRANSUNION just to review what kind of activity has been going on with my credit. Usually, this isn't a big deal and it gives me a chance to review whether I want to close any unused accounts, etc.

However, this year I am wondering if I should be pulling my credit information from EQUIFAX CANADA. Is there any reason not to do this given their recent data breach problems? I understand the issue was with EQUIFAX in the U.S. but thought I should post this question on RFD on case someone has some advice or suggestions that I haven't considered before doing so. My thinking is that my request to pull information about myself isn't going to change the information EQUIFAX CANADA has in my file so it wouldn't matter either way but perhaps there is some other reason for me NOT to pull my credit information from EQUIFAX CANADA.

Thanks for any comments, advice or suggestions.
