Capital One cancelling IHG Rewards Card

I just received a letter that "Capital One and Six Continent Hotels have mutually decided to end their partnership. As a result, you'll no longer be able to use your card, effective November 7, 2016". Does anyone have any suggestions on a card that has Car Insurance and good points? Should I just call Capital One to see if they can move me to another card?

Feedback needed - negotiating with CRA

$

My friend B. went through a period of indiscretion in the nineties and did not pay enough income tax. Part of this was driven by multiple disabilities, including mental and physical illness, and active alcoholism/addiction.

This friend sobered and went to work full time for ten years. They made several attempts to reconcile the matter, also requesting a fairness consideration for disabilities. It didn't get resolved, but they didn't get an income tax refund during that time, either.

Excepting active addiction, these disabilities recurred in 2015, and B. lost his job. He has not been able to work since and is undergoing extensive physical and psychiatric therapy. His prognosis is not good.

CRA finally sent a 5-digit bill 2 weeks ago. 75% of this is penalty and interest.

B. will make restitution to the best of his ability, and has started volunteering payments. However as part of accommodating his disabilities, he would like to deal with a reasonable human being, and to examine the damage objectively in light of his ability to pay.

Is there an elegant way of discussing the matter and negotiating with the CRA? Inputs are appreciated.

Child Care Benefit Income Question

$

Hey all,

My wife and I have been talking about having a child. My wife might take the full year for mat leave, which she wasn't considering before.

This year our combined income will be close to $300k. However, this is variable from year to year because I have two jobs - one is in real estate sales, which is inconsistent, and the other is a contract academic position that renews annually IF they have the grant money.

My understanding of the CCB is that it is based on the previous year's family income. Our income could drop to $70k or something when we have a newborn. Am I correct that, regardless of that, we wouldn't be eligible based on my previous year? We would only be eligible in the second year if my wife decided not to go back to work?

Cheers

Almost debt free!

Hi guys and gals, long time lurker/part time poster here.

As a product of the mid-late 80s I am almost debt free (excludes mortgage, no car payment!) and would appreciate some RFD recommendations on what to re-balance for future expenses while maintaining the ability to obtain "good" credit.

I was able to save a lot on interest from the NSLSC onto 3 very low rated MBNA Platinum Plus Balance Transfers.

Three years ago I owed close to 25k which will be nulled next paycheck. :D :D :D :D :D :D

These are my current credit lines:
20k Limit CIBC Unsecured LOC 6.05% - Ideally get this rate as low as possible? Local advisor told me they can't go lower than 5.7% which I may not even qualify for.
12.5k - MBNA Platinum Plus Mastercard - Possible to convert to something I'd use? Smart Cash or RWE?
6k Tangerine CashBack Mastercard - Only used for recurring bills, restaurants and gas @ 2%
7.5k PC World Elite - Most frequent card, especially for groceries at PC branded stores.
2k HBC Mastercard - Former employee discount card, wifey uses it lol
2k CIBC Tim Hortons Visa - Oldest credit card history, used every 6 months. Tangerine card has better return at Tim's hah
5k Jewlery store card - Used this for 12 month no payment and no interest! Cancel this card immediately?

Aside from previous BT, all of the balances are paid in full and on time, all the time. My credit score has always been 720+ and probably over 800 by now. With no debt on file should I shop around for lower LOC (Won't qualify for a HELOC for a few more years) rates and then cancel the Jewlery card as it has 2 years worth of history? I think my limits are generous and perfect for Tangerine and PC cards as they are my most frequently used ones. Apparently MBNA no longer converts cards, not sure what to do next with the 12.5k limit on the Platinum Plus?

Thanks for the future advice fellow RFD's :)

Door-to-door canvasser

$

So I was at a friend's house yesterday when someone knocked at the door. My friend went to answer the door only to be greeted by a door-to-door canvasser from a large, extremely well-known national charity. She started introducing herself and giving her presentation and my friend acknowledged that he, too, had done his share of canvassing and knew what it can be like. The canvasser suddenly became agitated, almost ready to be argumentative, and then broke into tears. My friend was very startled by this behaviour and asked if she was okay. She then said she was having a bad day, left and sat down on the curb in front of his house totally crying for all the neighbours to see. This was very disturbing to both of us and seemed like very odd behaviour for a door-to-door canvasser.

My friend and I looked at each other thinking what to do. My friend grabbed a tissue and went outstide to talk to her. My friend ended up making a donation but was quite disturbed by the whole incident and actually felt that this is not how the donation process should work. I don't think it is fair to this canvasser nor the people that answer the door to have to be put through this type of stress. (Although my friend did not say anything to the canvasser, both of us actually have a couple of issues with some of the political choices this organization has made in the past and would probably like to contribute to organizations that are more aligned with our ethics and not what we believe to be as questionable politics but yesterday sure did not seem like the time to bring up this topic for discussion.) It seems to me that this very large and well known charity should get their stuff together and not be sending out people door to door who are not cut out for this type of work. I don't expect anybody who reads this to be able to do anything but I thought if I shared it, it might make me feel less disturbed.

Can bank tell the difference between automatic PAD and one-time PAD

$

Long story short, I set up an eBay PAD to pay the seller fees automatically every month. For the first month, the automatic PAD went through. The transaction posted as "Direct Debit" on my chequing account. For the second month, I noticed that I can make a one-time eBay PAD payment (using the chequing account I set up for automatic PAD), without waiting for eBay's automatically PAD to go through on a particular date, so I tried it, and noticed this transaction was posted as "Direct Debit" on my chequing account as well. My question is, can bank tell the difference between automatic PAD and one-time PAD (other than the post date)? I need this PAD to be automatic re-occurring every month, and hope I didn't screw things up.

Hi !

My wife and I are with desjardins since we were kids. Last year i've got an appointment with them to change my line of credit, and they refuse to do anything. One year later it's time to change (I know it,s late..)

here's our situation:

Annual Familial income: 158k
2 kids (4 and 8) for which we want to get study plan (REE in french)
Mortage of 206k with Industrial alliance that is at 2,59 until july 2020
2 cars that will be full paid in december and in june
Credit card (2 each) that are at zero
Line of credit with Scotia (5,2 interest rate) that is at 6k (roof repair last year) We put 540$ monthly on that line of credit.
4000$ in bank account for travel and /or unexpected expense

We want to get a personnal account and one for both of us (groceries, bills, mortage). Line of credit with the new bank etc...

We got an RBC near home, would it do the trick ?

Any advices ?

Money Wire from Germany never arrived

Hey guys, I was supposed to receive a money wire from Germany. It was sent on Aug 25th and the amount was 10000 Euros. It was supposed to go into my Scotabank Euro account but it never arrived. The people at the bank are clueless and just don't care. They tell me that the bank in Germany is supposed to trace the transfer and see where the problem is. I was wondering if someone ever had a similar problem and how it was resolved.

Scotiabank, basically everything needs to go through home branch.
RBC, client card limits are set by the home branch apparently, call center won't do anything.

Creating a home business for tax purposes?

$

My friend invited me to a MLM meeting with a portion of it being tax deductions. The cost to start the business is from $159 - 3599, with monthly fees. If I were to take the lowest business starting cost, which would equate to $600 a year.

They claim I can use majority of my expenses, 20% of my mortgage interest, utilities, insurance, the works on the house if I claim it as my "office". Or if I buy a new TV or computer, I can also claim it as expenses for my business. He recommends that I also get an accountant who will cover my ass if I do get audited. It sounds a little like fraud.
So I thought of something else. My fiancee, who lives with me currently, does vocal lessons at home. If I were to establish that as a home business, would I be able to write off majority of the home bills - even internet?

How much of this is true, and a viable way of saving money on taxes?
We both make over $60,000 each so I am hoping that we can save more on taxes.

Credit unions in MB

Why do you think there are so many credit unions in MB that offer high interest? They are insured by a provincial plan(not sure what it is called) but I was surprised to find accelerate, oaken and a few other high rate accounts are all in MB.
High interest as in 1.7%. High compared to major banks.

I have a bank draft for $7500 that I just received tonight. I'm moving in the morning and it's going to be tricky to get to the bank during the day. I have mobile deposit on my PC Financial account, but does that work for bank drafts? When I search it says personal cheque and money orders. Same thing?
