end of rent contract extension

i have a question regarding rental contracts. Did a quick google search but didnt really find anything definitive. so I am renting a condo near finch and just about to complete my 1 year contract. I was under the impression that it would automatically go month to month, and whenever i want to leave i just have to give 2 months notice. However, my landlord is pressuring me to give either a 6 month or 1 year contract extension.

Is this legal? If i do give a 1 year extension but want to leave halfway, is that still possible?
