I'm confused - is TD eSeries for me?

After learning about the TD eSeries accounts I thought they would be perfect for me, until I read some threads on here that are making me reconsider.

Looking for help in clarifying a few things:

This is my situation and what I'd like to do:

I have a TD checking account (my EasyWeb account also shows WebBroker US Cash and CDN Cash, so I guess I'm already signed up for that. Never used it before though).
I already have RRSP and TFSA funds with an adviser. I don't think my funds are doing as well as they should be. Some of them are regular TD funds.
I want to open an index fund to track the US markets. No clue which fund (suggestions welcome :) ). Looking at putting in $5k. Non-registered.
No intentions of moving the money for many months/years - like a "sit and wait" strategy. Maybe invest more if it does OK compared to my other funds.

Do I need to pay an annual fee or any other fees (besides the MER)?

Does TD Waterhouse charge a fee?

Can I manage this directly through EasyWeb? Hopefully by selecting "create new account" and add one of the eSeries?

Is there anything else I'm missing? I'm open to all advice/suggestions, but please keep in mind I don't know much about this stuff. Thanks!
