I have an MBNA Smartcash World CC that I used for gas and groceries. I went to check it online this morning and noticed a 1.00 authorization from a CVS Pharmacy in Michigan (I live in BC).
I thought it might be a red flag. From what I know 1.00 authorizations are used to test the validity of a card. It can be used by a company you do business with or for fraud to see if a CC number/CVS# are active. It's the first credit card I've owned that shows authorizations before they become charges.
I called up MBNA and they didn't seen to worried about it and wanted me to wait until there was something more concrete (like an actual charge). I told her my suspicions and she offered to issue me a new number (ie report my card lost/stolen).
I got the feeling from the rep that I was being pretty paranoid. The thing is I'd rather stem it off now than have to deal with reversing a bunch of transactions later on. I buy stuff online all the time but I constantly monitor my accounts for unusual charges. I'm pretty good at spotting something I didn't authorize.
Did I pull the trigger to early or would most of you have done the same?
