Best US Bank Account for Canadians?

I do a lot of shopping/travelling in the US and wouldn't mind getting a US bank account that will give you a visa debit card or whatever.
I'm looking for something with low fees, and I can transfer money to from XE.com as they have a good exchange rate.
I live in Halifax so probably the closest city would be Bangor to open the account.
